Using Pioneer Report MDI

Introduction.

The purpose of this article is to explain how to use Pioneer Report MDI with General Reuse Markup Language, GRML.

Background.

Before continuing, it may be useful to know how GRML differs from other formats and markup languages.Introducing GRML covers this.

For an overview of GRML, read GRML Overview. To understand the history behind GRML, read Understanding GRML. It sets the timeframe for creating GRML.

The specifics of the latest version of GRML are covered in Using GRML. It explains the syntax, tags, and formatting of the markup language. Examples are provided showing how to create a GRML file or web page.

Pioneer Report MDI supports text, images, and hyperlinks. When using GRML, CSV, or text delimited formats, it uses them as an adapter, a reader, a viewer, an editor, and a writer. To learn about browser uses, read Examining GRML.

Using the browser.

Pioneer Report MDI uses multi-document interface. MDI browsers contain an area called the workspace. The workspace contains child windows. Each child, or browser, window displays content from files or web pages.

Launching the first time.

The navigation buttons and loading buttons work the same in Tree MDI as other HTML browsers. The Forward button loads a request submitted after the current one. The Back button loads the previous request. The Stop button interrupts and stops any loading or displaying. The Refresh button sends the current request for loading.

The address bar works the same as other HTML web browsers. It is used to open a file from the local filesystem or a web page using an URL. Once loaded (or downloaded), a browser window opens (if not already open) and displays the content. Any request, thereafter, from the address bar goes to this browser window. To open another window, press Ctrl+N. Now, all address bar requests appear in this new window. In other words, the browser window, having focus, receives the file or web page request from the address bar.

The browser window.

Instead of submitting a request using the address bar, it is possible to send a request using the form of a browser window. A form contains input controls for user input. Input controls allow form requests if a destination has been specified. Sending requests is covered when describing GRML form tags.

In addition to displaying a form, each browser window has a view. The view uses display controls. The display controls supported in Pioneer Report MDI are column and result.

Once a request has been submitted, Pioneer Report MDI reads and displays the GRML. It creates a form (if necessary) at the top of the browser window using input controls. It shows display controls, below the form, in the view. There are four views in Pioneer Report:
  • Report,
  • Horizontal List,
  • Vertical List, and,
  • Thumbnail.
Below are two examples of views.
