Be a Search Engine Survivor

Introduction.

To get traffic-generating placement in the search engines, it requires some planning and forethought.

The first thing to avoid is being a me-too website. These are websites providing yet another source, of readily available information. This is one, of many things, needed to get, and keep, a desirable search engine ranking.

Placement without paying.

It is possible to get a very personal website highly placed in the search engines, without paying for search engine inclusion. This includes no payments for advertising.

Without paying a dime to anyone, it is possible to get websites, ranked well, for traffic-generating keywords. However, just because no dollars changed hands, does not mean no price is paid. It does require a HUGE effort. And, to generate revenues, you rely on affiliates to generate $$$$.

Identify the topic.

Identify your passion. This helps to identify a general niche. Next, do a search, using terms from this niche. This reveals myriads of related websites. Examine the positive and negative aspects of these related websites.

When examining related websites, hone in on the negative aspects. Imagine what makes the information better. This is where you identify the "twist". This is the "unique selling proposition" for the website, to attract visitors.

Identifying the topic, of a website, is the lead-in for finding the keywords and the name of the website.

Researching keywords.

Overture, WordTracker, and associated tools are priceless for researching keywords. Keyword searching, in search engines, shows what websites are competitors.

Naming the website.

Take the researched keywords and decide on a domain name. This includes an analysis of competition, and memorability.

If you do not choose a keyword-rich name, you need to work on getting branded. Make a point of introducing yourself to the bigger websites, in your niche, and get quality backlinks.

Honey for the bear.

Give 'em what they want -- not just in the beginning, but also through the feedback (questions, comments, etc.).

Make the content valuable to them, even if it's just a matter of presenting it differently.

Put personal websites at a personal level. Let 'em know we're all equal. Share something they want. This is where content comes into play.

Be knowledgeable about your niche theme. Don't go for plumbing, if the closest thing to water you've done is fishing and dishes. This is where you decide which content to use, and how.

Creating value.

If you want to keep desirable search engine rankings, this is not an overnight thing. You've got to go through a whole cycle of seasons. This shows you the good times, and the bad times, for any marketing "push". You are able to then gauge what works and when (this relates to generating $$$).

To be perceived as a valuable asset, to another, bigger website, you've got to offer something more than the norm in your niche. This way, you aren't buried on page ten of the smaller search sites, or other link pages.

To be perceived as useful to a visitor, you've got to answer their questions, or answer their frustrations.

Conclusion.

Whew!! It looks like a lot, but it isn't. Using some of the above techniques, you gain the experience needed to help you build your site into an Internet survivor.
