Ineffective Search Engine Optimization Methods

Introduction.

There are many steps required to optimize a web page for search engines. Many times, a tip only works on a specific search engine. Or, it helps on one, but hurts on another. However, it does improve results somewhere, at some point.

In contrast, some SEO tips do not work well anywhere. Using these so-called "tips" wastes time, because it does not improve results. Here, learn what to avoid.

SEO Tips to avoid.

  • Stuffing <!--Comments Tags--> with keyword phrases.
  • Stuffing ambiguous meta elements with keyword phrases.
  • Stuffing your page titles with keyword phrases.
  • Duplicate meta tags.
  • Hidden <div>'s stuffed with keyword phrases.

This requires a manual review, by the search engines, to catch. But, expect to receive a hefty penalty from Google, if caught. Same goes for hidden links.

  • Place the entire content of the page in alt tags.

If you do this to duplicate content outside of the tags, it does not improve anything. Why? The search engine has already indexed it once. The content, in alt tags, does not add anything new.

  • Multiple-Keyword-Rich-Hyphenated-Domain-Names-That-Are-Purely-Spam.

This is very easy to spot. It is like putting up a flashing, red sign announcing the domain is strictly for manipulating search engine results.

In those cases, where it does work, they are susceptible to SPAM reports by competitors. With a name so obviously manipulative, it is not difficult for a search engine to conclude the domain is abusive.

  • Submission to thousands of search engines.

This is really pointless. It is amazing people still worry about this, because it is not the way to high rankings, or even inclusion.

  • Canonical abuse.

    This is doing the following:

    search-engine-optimization.domain.com/search-engine-optimization/search-engine-optimization.htm

    web-site-optimization.domain.com/web-site-optimization/web-site-optimization.htm

    blue-widgets-in-holyoke-better-than-yours.domain.com/blue-widgets-in-holyoke-better-than-yours/blue-widgets-holyoke.htm

It works, but is a pain to maintain as a site grows. For sanity sake, keep domains sensible and uniform. A better way to do this is:

    search-engines.domain.com/optimization
    or,
    searchengines.domain.com/optimization

    websites.domain.com/optimization

    bluewidgets.domain.com/holyoke

Using canonicals works well, but be sensible how you use them.

  • Putting different content in the <noframes> section of a frame.

A manual review bans you, if it's just spam. Otherwise, do not be surprised at all when other web pages, on the domain, lose positions in the search engine results.

  • Link to Google for search terms, where you have good rankings.

You want to find yourself with PR0? Do you want to be at the forefront of Google's radar? This is the way to do it.

    Conclusion.

There are many things webmasters do which produce no results. This offers a few examples of things not to do.
