Experiences with webrings

Introduction.

Web rings aren't known to be good sources of traffic. The linking power benefit is not to the members of the ring. Instead, the site hosting the web ring receives all the benefits.

From experience.

Several websites, using webring code on their homepage, not only had slower loading times, but diminished linking power. Instead of improving its own visibility, each web page served to promote the web pages of the webring. What should have rightfully been routed to their own site, was lost. In addition, all they got in return was untargeted, unqualified traffic. This is the type with little reason to stay or buy.

Many webrings are a good source for fonts and graphics. Some are free, while others are commercial. For this, webrings are common and lucrative. However, this is not the case for shopping in general. One exception might be crafts areas. But, when the goal is generating traffic, it is still low on the totem pole for traffic priorities.

"Theme" in the ring.

To get greater benefits from a webring, it has been suggested to stay within the theme of your website, when providing links.

When using a theme approach, it is ideal to be close... but not too close for comfort. Close is finding complementary webrings. Too close is linking to the competition.

While researching sites for links, some appear to be good resources for links or traffic. However, upon further examination, there is too strong a connection with direct competitors. While the site will benefit from your links (or ads), ultimately the major recipient of benefits will be the competition. No point in making their business stronger, at your expense.

Conclusion.

Though some webrings provide benefits, some do not. It greatly depends on how it's done. Several have gotten the thumbs down because they are direct competitors. This is despite their having excellent resources.

The best approach to webrings is to determine if they are providing significantly more benefits than costs. Since so much of it is outside of your control, it is best to be diligent when considering joining one.

Remember, complementary and close but not directly competing is the goal.
