Webrings Revisited

Introduction.

Time to take another look at webrings.

Types of webringts.

There are two types of webrings.

  • Intrasites.

Intrasite webrings are designed to increase/facilitate navigation and improve traffic within pages of a site, or portal.

  • Intersites.

Intersite webrings are designed to increase/facilitate navigation and improve traffic between websites.

A General Idea.

The democratic idea, behind a webring, is to include websites (or pages) as part of a pre-patterned link structure (circular, in this case). This way, each has the same probability of being visited, by a user, at a given part (e.g. site or webpage) of the ring.

This probability is 50-50. It assumes one reciprocal link scheme per member (no crossed links or jumps between members).

Helping and hurting.

There are two things helping or hurting members of such link structures.

One is the composition of the ring. If all members are topically business related, this is a plus. Small companies linked to large companies, or competitors, gain visibility and recognition among peers. This is a plus.

Another thing to consider is the link mechanism itself. If the "Next" and "Previous" mechanisms are hard-coded links (statics), and are keyword optimized, this is a plus.

What if the webring mechanism is dynamically-generated (eg., via a javascript)? There is a chance the link may not be crawled, or followed. Therefore, no great link building benefits are derived here, from the crawling standpoint.

Webring tactics.

Avoid using static links in webrings, especially for huge webrings. Why? If using static links, each time someone wants in/out of the ring, it creates an administrative nightmare for the webmaster. Each page requires hand-coding the pages, one by one.

The benefit of the dynamic approach comes each time someone wants in/out of the ring. The webmaster only need to remove a single link array entry from the script. This is the preferred linking mechanism. However, it has the above "no follow" drawback (i.e. hard for search engines to index the pages).

Linking No-no.

Stay away from client-side scripted webrings, unless they are heavily encrypted. Spammers, looking for link structures, eventually spam members of the ring. Also, a client-side database of links, as part of a webring, is available to your competitors. Or, who knows what. This includes business intelligence (BI).

Conclusion.

A single, dynamic-linking, webring mechanism, sitting at the server level, is the recommended way to create a webring.
