What is a boil?

A boil, or furuncle, is a skin disease. It is caused by the inflammation of hair follicles. This results in the localized accumulation of pus and dead tissues. Individual boils cluster together and form an interconnected network of boils called carbuncles. In severe cases, boils develop, to form abscesses. skin boils pictures

Symptoms of boils.

Symptoms, of boils, are red, pus-filled lumps. They are tender, warm, and/or painful. A yellow, or white, point at the center of the lump is seen when the boil is ready to drain, or discharge pus. In a severe infection, multiple boils develop and the patient experiences fever and swollen lymph nodes.

For some people, itching develops before the lumps begin to develop.

Most boils are found on the back, underarms, shoulders, face, and buttocks.

Causes of boils.

Generally, boils are caused by an infection. This results from hair follicles, by Staphylococcus aureus or staph. It is a strain of bacteria normally living on the skin surface. It is thought a tiny cut of the skin allows this bacteria to enter the follicles and cause an infection.

People with immune system disorders, diabetes, poor hygiene, and malnutrition are particularly susceptible to getting boils. However, they also occur in healthy, hygenic individuals.

Treatment of boils.

Most boils run their course, within 4 to 10 days. For most, self-care is administered by applying a warm compress or soaking the boil in warm water. This helps alleviate the pain and hasten draining of the pus (colloquially called "bringing the boil to a head"). Once the boil drains, the area is washed with antibacterial soap and bandaged well. skin boils pictures

For serious cases, prescription oral and topical antibiotics are required.
