A web, or hit, counter is a web page add-on which counts and displays the number of visitors, or hits, to a web page. Once added, these counters increment by one, for each time the web page is requested by a web browser.

You've worked on your website and it looks great. You update regularly and have good content. There are great graphics and lots of fun links to all sorts of great websites. Now you wonder if anyone is seeing all the hard work you have done. How many people are visiting your website and who are they?
One way to keep track of visitors is with a hit counter. Usually, it is a little box, which is put at the bottom of a web page. Every time someone requests your web page, the number in the box increases by one (1). This tells you, and everyone else who visits, how many people have been there.
Of course, this is the beginning of knowing your popularity. There is more, such as knowing who is visiting and how often they visit. For this, something more is needed. Namely, you need something which helps you keep track of stats.

There are very simple counters, which display only the number of visits your page has had. Other hit counters keep track of visitors and have logs to keep track of page views. They track date, day, and time. Some hit counters tell you what site people came from and what browser they are using.
With more advanced hit counters, you get more information about visitors. For instance, you get hourly breakdowns of page views. They help you know what day and time most people are visiting your site.
Other features include counting country of origin. In this case, to be more responsive to visitors, you prepare content based on language and country. Visitors really appreciate this!
Some counters have advanced analysis features. They have statistics keeping track of hourly, daily, monthly, and yearly visits. They have charts, which allow you to see trends easily. Different graphics are available to use for the hit counter, so select the one which looks best on your website.

With information about your visitors, use it to understand who is coming to your website, when they are coming, and from where. This lets you add content which is more intriguing to your visitors. Plus, if you want to communicate with your audience, you know what times they are available.
