Hotmail is one of the most popular free 'webmail' e-mail services. It is accessible from anywhere on the planet, using a standard web browser. It was founded by Jack Smith and Sabeer Bhatia, in 1995. Its commercial launch was on July 4, 1996.

Origin of the name Hotmail.
When Sabeer Bhatia developed a business plan for the mail service, he tried all kinds of names ending in 'mail'. He finally settled on hotmail, as it included the letters "HTML". Initially, it was HoTMaiL, with selective upper casing.
Hotmail was backed by the venture capital firm, Draper Fisher Jurvetson. It was sold to Microsoft corporation. They rebranded it, under its MSN umbrella. read hotmail inbox
Hotmail growth.
By December 1997, Hotmail reported more than 8.5 million subscribers. By February 1999, it reported more than 30 million active members. Hotmail serves e-mail accounts, in many countries. It is currently the largest webmail provider.

Hotmail offers, many of its members, 250MB of free e-mail storage. It is available for sent, or received, e-mail. For a fee, customers get 2GB of storage. In contrast, Yahoo! Mail offers 1GB for free, to all of its members. For 2GB, it is offered at a price. Gmail, from Google, offers over 2GB for free.

Hotmail does not have POP3 email access. However, it is possible to check email using Microsoft Outlook, and Outlook Express, on PC. Check Microsoft Entourage, on Mac, using the WebDAV protocol.

Using the email service, without a web browser, was free for a number of years. However, on September 27, 2004, Microsoft announced they were making it a subscription-only service, for new users immediately. Beginning April, 2005, it applied to existing users.
