Description.

There are several sets of conditions where a salvage car makes good sense. (if you are very mechanically inclined, if you are not then there will be fewer sets of conditions where this makes sense).

Before reading conditions for buying salvaged vehicles, there are two situations where you NEVER want to buy.
  • Do not purchase a salvaged title vehicle on ebay, unless the seller is close enough to allow personal inspection.
  • Do not purchase a salvaged title vehicle as a primary family car!
As has been pointed out, "salvage" simply means the cost of repairs is greater than the blue book value of a car. In older vehicles, it easy for this to mean nothing more than cosmetic damage. damaged wrecked cars for sale

First, the price has to be low enough so resale value is not a consideration. This also means collision and comprehensive insurance is not an issue either.

Here are a few conditions where a salvage car might be a good idea:

1. The first car for a boy in the family. (Females need a more reliable car. Don't argue. Accept the world the way it is.)

All of my kids have managed to collect a few dents and dings, in the first couple of years after starting to drive. It hurts a lot less, when it is in a very cheap old car with no expectation of resale. If they wound the car you avoid the embarassment of driving it with a great big dent until they scrape up the money for repair. This is the best "driving improvement" instruction around. damaged wrecked cars for sale

Plus, doing mechanical repairs is a great way for some father-son bonding. It provides an incentive for learning how to use tools--a valuable asset for any young adult.

2. A genuine "beater" car.

For instance, around here, public transit seldom comes close to anyone's job. An old car left overnight at the train station, near work, is fairly common among young professionals.

3. Anyone who needs a very inexpensive car.

I sometimes work with troubled young men. They all desperately want to get "wheels". However, they have no credit, problems with the law preventing establishing credit, and very little chance of getting a loan. damaged wrecked cars for sale

Most of them work, and save up enough to get an older, salvaged vehicle. Often, it is a better, more reliable choice than an older vehicle, without the title blemish. For a few, this is the first step to a better job. It is another step toward re-integration into normal society.

The big deal here is a salvage car is considered a "throw away", unless you are a professional mechanic.

P.S. In CA at least, and probably in most states, a salvage car must be inspected. You must prove it has all of its safety equipment working, before registration. Safety equipment might include items you would ordinarily choose not to fix on a "beater". For instance, the back-up lights must work, both of them.
