Film is called movies, the cinema, the silver screen, moving pictures, photoplays, picture shows, flicks, or motion pictures. It is a field encompassing motion pictures, as an art form, or the entertainment industry. Because photographic film, historically, has been the primary medium for displaying moving images, academics often refer to this field as the study of film.

Motion pictures are three things. It is an art form, a popular form of entertainment, and a business. Film is produced by recording "real" people, and objects (including played-out fantasy and fakes), using cameras, and/or animation. Amature Pages and Videos

Often, the word film refers to photographic film. This is the film used to make still photographs. Or, film refers to the flexible strip of plastic, covered in a light-sensitive silver halide solution. This is called filmstock, on which motion pictures have historically been made.

The images, in a motion picture, are all individual photographs. When they appear rapidly, in succession, the human eye does not detect separate images. A common misunderstanding is how we perceive motion. This covers the successive projection of still images, as a result of persistence of vision. This is a phenomenon where the eye retains a visual image for a fraction of a second, after the source has been removed.

The basis for perceiving animation or motion in films is actually due to the perception of apparent motion, first identified as the "phi-phenomenon" as first investigated by the Gestalt psychologists. Persistence of vision has more to do with our not perceiving "flicker" as different images are projected onto the screen.

Today, many motion pictures are still recorded using specially designed cameras that capture the images on rolls of film. After being processed and printed, the film is run through a projector. It shines light through the film, so images are displayed on a screen.

Most movies have accompanying sound. The soundtrack is recorded separately, from shooting the film. However, for live-action pictures, many parts of the soundtrack are usually recorded simultaneously. Amature Pages and Videos

Some films in recent decades have been recorded using analog video technology similar to that used in television production. More recently, many films are being recorded with a digital video camera and later projected using digital projectors and/or transferred to film. One of the major benefits of shooting digitally is that decisions can be made without waiting for the film stock to be processed.

Amature - A Definition.

The word amature has at least two connotations. In the first, more widely used manner, it means someone performing some task without pay, in contrast to a "professional" who would be paid for the same task.

In this sense, labeling someone an "amature" has a negative connotation. For example, amature athletes in sports, such as basketball or football, are not regarded as having ability on par with professional athletes, in those sports. Amature Pages and Videos

Where this can be interesting is in the case of the Olympic Games. Most Olympic events required that the athletes be amatures, or non-professionals. To receive pay to perform the sport could have disqualified an athlete from an event, as in the case of Jim Thorpe. Such regulations are now nonexistent for all Olympic sports with the exception of boxing.

In the areas of computer programming, and open source, as well as astronomy and ornithology, many amatures make meaningful contributions. Sometimes, these are equivalent to, or exceed, those of professionals. To many, description as an amature is losing its negative meaning. In these cases, it is honorable.

The other, perhaps somewhat obsolete usage, stems from the French form of the Latin root of the word meaning a "lover of". (See amatureism.) In this sense, retaining its French inflexion ("am-a-tEUR"), an amature may be as competent as a paid professional, yet is motivated by a love or passion for the activity, like a connoisseur. In the 17th and 18th centuries virtuoso had similar connotations of passionate involvement.

It has been suggested that the crude, all or nothing categories of professional or amature should be reconsidered. A historical shift is occurring with the rise of Pro-Ams, a new category of people that are pursuing amature activities to professional standards.
