Motivating Affiliates

Introduction.

Here are some techniques for motivating affiliates to promote a merchant website.

Pre-qualifying.

Suppose you want to encourage affiliates who focus their efforts on pre-qualifying their traffic. This is what you do.

Increase commission rates based on conversion rate, or, the percentage of traffic an affiliate brings which converts to paying customers. In theory, the affiliates who have good mini-sites, or good copy, have a higher conversion rate.

Assuming affiliates are okay with it (and some are not), post a list of the affiliates with the top 10 conversion rates. Have links to these top 10 sites, or emails, or whatever.

New affiliates have the opportunity to model their efforts on these examples. Of course, many of the top affiliates are not going to be keen about giving away their secrets.

Volume goals.

Another idea is to stick with volume sales goals. However, calculate different break points for each affiliate. Base it on their past sales.

If someone sold $50 last month, then improving to $55 this month gives them a 3% bonus to their commission. An affiliate who did $3000 in sales, needs to increase to $3300, or $3600, to get a 3% bonus.

Of course, if it makes sense for your product line, it really motivates your affiliates when paying them a commission for repeat customers. This makes business sense, as well. Why? Repeat customers are the life-blood of most businesses.

Conclusion.

These are a few suggestions for getting affiliates to produce more for a merchant.
