Doing business on the web

Introduction.

Website businesses are successful in many different ways. For websites depending on sales, they all tend to share common characteristics.

The Product Or Service.

Most website businesses know to research their products, or services, as well as competitors. Selling on the web means competing against the world. Of course, your market is the world, too. Once someone selling your product gets a website, suddenly another competitor is born. There is nothing wrong with that. It simply forces you to stay competitive.

There is always someone who will undercut your prices/quotes/estimates. Look at their credentials and/or benefits. Many companies offer ridiculously low prices just to get the sale. These are price competitors. Many, many shoppers just fly to the lowest price. They perceive it to be the better deal.

No matter what type of business it is, you need to be prepared for price competitors. This is what separates some of the budding new business ventures from the more seasoned ones. A marketing plan, predefined credentials, and benefits to the customer separate a website business from its competition.

The heart of it all.

On the web, web pages are the heart of any venture. They are the backbone of all your efforts.

Empahsize the proper parts.

Copy first, design and graphics later. While design and graphics are important, they have their place. Keep in mind, if you provide products/services, you need examples available. This includes some good copy.

When *almost* anyone visits a site, if there are words, they will read. If the words are poor, they may skip the meat and continue to other areas. This is where the company with great services and a good marketing plan may fail and succumb to their competitors. They use a poor choice of words/communication and presentaion.

What gets results.

Fancy graphics and presentations inspire to a certain degree. However, they often don't meet the level of sales needed on their own. Graphics and a list of products/services don't make sales, words do.

Every word, paragraph, image on your web site needs to be intensely focused on inspiring visitors to take some sort of action. This includes a series of actions, to lead them toward the sale. It is an extremely competitive world, the world wide web. Your product/service, web site, and marketing strategy all hinge greatly on your words.

Off To The Market.

SEO aside.....

It is important to develop a short-term and long-term strategy.

Words are the most powerful marketing tool there is. The right words turn prospective clients into customers. Unfortunately, wrong words, or unfocused presentations/communications, cause them to look elsewhere, shut you out, and likely never return.

This has been mentioned, but word-of-mouth is by far the best you'll ever get for business. There are websites unwilling to lower prices, in response to the competition. This is because word-of-mouth and the uniqueness of the product/service trumps price.

Common techniques, but very effective.

  • The product/service needs to go above and beyond the expected.
  • Research the competetion, find weaknesses, and exploit them.
  • Provide good examples of the benefits of your product/services.
  • Your customer service and support needs to be top notch, and proven.
  • Show examples how your company has helped individuals in there specific needs, not generally.
For previous clients, keep in touch. Don't let yourself get so busy you are not contacting previous clients. If you're not after a fast buck, your clientele is truly the heartbeat of website business.

Conclusion.

Doing business on the web is a battle against the competition. There are no barriers. To set yourself apart, be unique and try to avoid price competition. However, the most effective part of a website is copy, copy, copy.
