For sites where repeat visitors are not expected, consoles are tolerable. But, they are never desirable.
Sponsors and consoles.
Often, sponsors using consoles, make no real effort to sell with their free website content. Why damage your reputation? It is easier to simply avoid consoles completely. Why waste the time figuring out their place in every sponsor's strategy (e.g. what does and doesn't pay)?
What has happened.
Consoles have made people reluctant to click on sponsor (banner) links. Remember, file requests hitting the server are real people, spending their time. How did it ever get to the point where it was smart to play games. Why do something no bricks-and-mortar business would contemplate?
Sure, consoles do make money. And, if you throw enough mud, some of it sticks. But, it is also a lazy and destructive way to filter traffic, offer options, etc. Consoles have never done anything you cannot do another way. It only takes a little thought and imagination.
Coping with consoles.
You may ask, "what about the need to shave, if consoles go?" Well, it depends on who you believe. Some sponsors say consoles generate very little income. Others want you to think consoles still generate 15%-20% of their income. In any case, consoles or not, there is no guarantee you won't be shaved.
Conclusion.
The bottom line is, avoid consoles. They do not help the user, and ultimately, do not help you.
