Introducing Browsers

An introduction to file and web browsers.

Introduction.

The purpose of this article is to introduce GRML/CSV/delimited file and web browsers.

Background.

To follow the examples in this article, download a browser.

3 classes.

There are three types of browser, MDI, SDI, and dialog.

MDI, or multi-document interface, browsers contain an area called the workspace. The workspace contains child windows. Each child, or browser, window displays content from files or web pages.

SDI, or single-document interface, browsers only display content from ONE file or web page. They do not have a workspace.

Dialog browsers are used for file and web page processing, such as line or word counters, graphing, find/search/replace, or other automated processing.

Launching the first time.

When launching a browser, a dialog appears to select a history file. It appears as follows:

History dialog.

Files residing in the History installation folder appear in the top selection box. To use a selected file, press the GO button appearing beneath. Or, select a file from the filesystem. A file dialog appears. Once a file is selected, it appears in the text field. Press the GO button appearing beneath to use this file for history. To close the dialog without selecting a history file, press the Cancel button.

Once the history dialog is closed, a Tip of the Day dialog appears. It displays general information about using the browser, mouse and keyboard commands, and customizing the user interface.

Tip of the Day dialog.

After closing the Tip of the Day dialog, the user interface for the browser is available. There are buttons and toolbars similar to HTML web browsers.

The interface.

A browser has navigation buttons, such as Forward, Back, and Home Page. There are buttons for loading, such as Stop and Refresh. There is an address bar for file and web page requests.

The navigation buttons and loading buttons work the similarly to HTML browsers. The Forward button loads a request submitted after the current one. The Back button loads the previous request. The Stop button interrupts and stops any loading or displaying. The Refresh button sends the current request for loading.

The address bar works the same as other HTML web browsers. It is used to open a file from the local filesystem or a web page using an URL. Once loaded (or downloaded), a browser window opens (if not already open) and displays the content. Any request, thereafter, from the address bar goes to this browser window. To open another window, press Ctrl+N. Now, all address bar requests appear in this new window. In other words, the browser window, having focus, receives the file or web page request from the address bar.

The browser window.

Instead of submitting a request using the address bar, it is possible to send a request using the form of a browser window. A form contains input controls for user input. Input controls allow form requests if a destination has been specified. Sending requests is covered when describing GRML form tags.

In addition to displaying a form, each browser window has a view. The view uses display controls.

Conclusion.

There are different kinds of browser, MDI, SDI, and dialog. This article covered the MDI, or multi-document interface, browser and showed the different dialogs used when a browser is launched. The navigation buttons and address bar were discussed and their functions.

The basic elements of a browser window are the form and the view. The form has input controls. The view uses display controls. Input controls are used to send file and web requests and display controls are used to display columns and results. To learn more about a specific browser, read its product description and the Using... article that accompanies it.
